The Latest Edition of INTERPLAY is available

June 2010: Latest edition of Interplay

Editor Rea Dennis writes:
Inside this Interplay Mary Good's lead article explores the way playback has sought to express local colours with global textures through her observations of how this theatre of stories acts to develop communities.

From the early audiences of the Original Company (which were composed of children in their schools, disabled residents at their group home and friends and family in their neighbourhood) Playback has continued to find wide application in diverse contexts including specific audiences of identity and location.

This singular purpose has motivated the ongoing expansion of Playback Theatre. This issue honours the way this expansion has been responded to and enabled by practitioners with a special focus on the Global Playback Network initiated in 2005 by Raphael Peter and the Ashville Company. Raphael writes in this issue along with over twenty practitioners from around the world in a documentation of the five years of the annual Global Playback event, including a moving submission from the Taiwanese community.

Jonathan Fox also charts the development and expansion of playback and shares his current playback theatre focus and passion. Beyond the Playback practice reports, the issue continues to recognize the prolonged and profound developmental presence of Jo Salas. Read about what's been happening with letters from Cuba and India, a report from UK's Emergency Playback event and word from Berlin about their ongoing links with Greece. The latest from 2011 conference organizers and the IPTN Board is included.

European Playback Theatre Gathering 2009

The 2009 European Playback Theatre Gathering which took place 27 to 31 August in the village of Andreevka, on the shores of the Black sea, in Ukraine, was a big success. While the Russian and Ukrainian Playback communities are relatively new, they hosted a warm and imaginative event.

One morning, members of the village community and visitors to the summer resort, came along to the beach front and watched some Playback Theatre in the water. Fluid sculptures indeed!

The ending performance of Playback Theatre was presented by Mirror Mirror with Alison conducting Amanda, Andy, Arnet, and guests Sarah Urech (Hudson River PT) and Veronica Needa (True Heart & London PT) joining the line-up. Steve Nash (York PT) played music, with a Russian friend.

The next European Playback Theatre Gathering will be hosted by Mirror Mirror in the UK countryside in the summer of 2012 – sometime before or after the London Olympics.

2008 UK Playback Theatre Gathering

The 4th UK Playback Theatre Gathering took place at the Mountbatten Centre in Plymouth on 31 October - 2nd November 2008. Hosted by Mirror Mirror Playback Theatre it was three days of performances and workshops with over 40 playbackers coming together from far and wide. A special guest from across the Channel joined us - Yves Postic from Paris and Bretagne - bringing his very special talent for music and song to inspire us all.

Thank you Alison, Amanda, Arnet and Andy (www.mirrormirrortheatre.co.uk) for all your hard work and commitment to making this event happen so gracefully.

Offers to host the next UK Gathering? We seem to have created a pattern of meetings every two years. So perhaps a group might like to think about this for 2010.
