European Playback Festival 2012

Elemental Journeys

To be held on the beautiful and historic Dartington Hall Estate, South Devon, the festival will bring together people interested in Playback Theatre from across Europe and beyond. We will celebrate and explore how the simple act of coming together, sharing and re-enacting stories through the ritual of Playback Theatre that can inspire change, build community and promote social justice.

In this conference we use the theme of Elemental Journeys to remember that we are, every one of us, a force of nature. Our stories, shared, help create the landscape for communities. How can we trust the wild and unknown within the ritual of a Playback Theatre performance?

Registration is now open and people who book and pay before 20th January 2012 will get an early-bird discount saving £35 from the cost of the Festival fee, early registration will also make sure that you get the choice of accommodation that best suits your needs. We are also interested in applications from individuals and groups who are interested in running a workshop, hosting a discussion or talk or performing.

Conference organised by Mirror Mirror Playback Theatre and Playback Community Theatre South West.

Jonathan Fox on the Essence of Playback Theatre

Recorded at a Press Conference at the Haus am Dom, Frankfurt on 11.11.11

“People tell all kinds of stories - whatever is important for them to tell in that moment, on that day. Often it’s an everyday story. We bring that story to the stage. What is the atmosphere? What is the feeling? That’s what we listen for. What interests me most is for people to listen to each other. And for people to have the chance to tell what they need to tell in a context that’s secure and people will listen. And so in such a situation, many problems do get solved. A situation, a social situation, can be transformed. But this idea of dialogue, of connection is perhaps what’s most important. And the most amazing thing is - one person tells, and the next story is a story that shares a different perspective and so you have a series of stories that express the different sides of a question.”
